WALLEYE
(limit 2 fish per license / slot size 13.8 to 17.7 inches)

Tackle
Spinning Rod & Reel combo: Bass Pro EXTREME XPS 2pc 6’6” ML Fast rod with Daiwa 103 HVA reel.

Lures & Presentation
Spool spinning reel with 8lb. test mono Berkley XT / Tie your own Lindy-style rigs, 3-4 feet 8lb. Berkley Vanish, slide on a glowbead and tie a #2 circle hook (Gamakatsu Osprey), tie a dbl overhand loop at top end, store hooks on a Lindy Rigger Extreme.
Pull off some line and slide a ½ oz. Rock Runner slip sinker(Northland Tackle)unto line / tie a ball bearing snap swivel to end of line / snap on hook rig.  Use jumbo or large leeches hooked at suction cup
Locate fish
Note depth / toss marker buoy when fishing open water / move around s-s-slowly keeping line fairly vertical / reel sinker 1-2 turns off the bottom and feel for a ‘bite-nibble’ – NOT A STRIKE / stand up and tease the bite / wait for a serious pull down / go for the ‘moon’ on hook-set.
Rule: Don’t wander off your depth unless searching.

Walleye Release
Use surgical instrument when removing deep set hooks – go up
through gill rather than reaching down through mouth.

Spinnerbait: Ruff Tackle Deep 10 Rad Dog, 3.9 oz., single blade, (nickel blade/black rubber)
Jerk Bait / Pull Bait / Crankbait / Tube: Musky Innovations “
Pro Dawg" (orange tail sherbert color on sunny days) and “Heli-Dawg” black/orange (color) OR Monster Lures “Squirko”  blue (color) OR Phantom Tackle’s ‘Phantom Softtail’ 7 ½ inch OR NEW RubberHairy Tackle Co.’s ‘Swim n Spin DT’ (double tail) OR “Super Shad” with a Mustad “Ultra Point” Power Lock Plus hook OR Red October’s “Big Sexy Tube” 12” 9.4 oz.
Troll Baits: Legend “Perch Bait” Jointed OR Legend “Out-Cast” natural perch (color for both). Use “S-17 Down-East Salty Horizontal Rod Holder”.

Note: When slinging lures, a huge percentage of hook-ups occur at boatside – thus a long rod helps with the Figure 8 tactic: Create commotion and speed variations with rise and dive variants. A follow-up tactic is to explode the water surface with your rod tip, side to side about 3-4 feet apart leaving the lure to shudder in the middle (practice this for an easy rhythm). Don’t give up - maintain this for several minutes with big fish!

NORTHERN PIKE
(limit 4 fish per license / slot size 27.6 to 35.4 inches / only 1 fish over 35.4 inches)

MUSKY TIPS and lure suggestions apply for the most part for bigger northern pike. Use more color and spend more time with smaller bucktail and spinnerbait presentations. Mepps or Blue Fox Vibrax #3’s & # 4’s (plain) and especially the #6 Blue Fox (plain) work well.  Large spoons are a good choice, as are Jig & plastic combos. Include topwaters, jerk baits and crankbaits according to conditions.

Don’t forget  –  As important as lure selection may be, other choices are equally or more critical to fishing success: rod & reel choice, terminal tackle, fishing location, fishing technique and fishing conditions.  As a great philosopher once said, “Fish the spot-on-the-spot where they are - not where they ain’t!”
